(Pictured above) Still under construction, the new Coronation Park, Sports and Recreation Facility, Edmonton. The building’s siding is copper.

On my way to take a photo of the rear of the bleachers at Coronation Park Sports Field (in the distance in the image above), I came across this caution sign…!! – a closeup is below.

For Dan’s Sporting Venues — CFFC Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge.

What a contrast! Has the good makings of a horror movie, The Zombie Mowers of Coronation Park

The Roomba of lawns. Have you seen one in operation? Maggie

Maggie, I had visions of me being chased by one of them after reading the very carefully worded caution sign. So no, I did not venture further to see if one was in operation…lol! Lol!!!!

I love the look of that copper clad arena. What kind of defense measure should you carry before heading across that field. I wonder how fast those munching mowers move?

You are so thoughtful, Dan… “defense measures.” I was struck by the phrase “machines move without warning.” As you can tell from the very distant image of the bleachers, suffice it to say I did not stick around to examine the specifications of these mowers… LOL!!

I would like to think they wouldn’t mistake you for a tall weed, but I don’t think I’d venture out there.

Ahaha! A “tall weed?”, more like a shrub. Thanks Dan for the laughs.

Still under construction, the new Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Facility in Edmonton already looks impressive. I’m intrigued by the building’s copper siding—such an unusual and striking choice. It makes me wonder about the design thinking behind it.
I love how the project aims to meet community recreation needs while also creating space for year-round triathlon and cycling training and events. That’s incredible planning.
And that sign on the dry patch of grass—“Autonomous Lawnmower”—absolutely fascinated me. What does that even mean? Is the little machine out there living in chaos somewhere? It definitely made me smile.
I’m not sure we have a recreational centre of this magnitude here, though we do have several sports centres and stadiums across the country. Still, this one feels on a whole new level.
Curious and captivating photos for Dan’s Sporting Venues—and a big whoop-whoop for Edmonton 2026!

I am glad you like the look of the new Sports and Recreation facility. It has been a long time coming for the area. I don’t know the specific design/aesthtic reason for the copper siding, but copper siding stands up well in the harsh winters, here, reducing, perhaps the need for repairs as time moves on. It is super shiny though, I like that.
I am curious too about the fate of the “autonomous mowers”…what do they do all day when not in service after their batteries are recharged…I wonder? Watch Twilight Zone re-runs, perhaps??
Glad you enjoyed the share of this brief visit to Coronation Park, Edmonton.

It is a trend here to build unique buildings, as perhaps is the case everywhere, I would imagine..

Yes, I believe so Suzette.
Though some sadly are quite ugly to look at .

Thank you for sharing your pics. They afforded me the time and pleasure to do some research and as always inspiring me to write something.
I think you are right about the copper siding. It makes complete sense. I wonder if copper keeps in the heat during the cold winter months.
Lol, for twilight zones.
Being autonomous, it feels like they can do as they please, as the need arise.
Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed.

You are most welcome. It is a delight to share them. I am glad you find them valuable for research and musings. I am very happy to hear that, truly.
I don’t know the conductivity values of copper, so I am not sure about retaining heat. I know it can disperse heating systems’ output, but then again, I am not certain of that either.
Have a blessed Tuesday. You are always generous with your flowers. Bless you.

Thank you, I do.
I don’t know much about the values of copper either. I do know that wearing a copper bangle is good for arthritis.
You are most deserving. Wishing you a blessed Tuesday too.

That could make for quite a story with autonomous lawnmowers moving without warning!

The sign just takes the mind to TV and movie show plots that would perhaps suit this theme…lol.

It might look like North by Northwest a bit, plane zooming low over their heads vs. mower nipping on their heels…

Thanks Warren, I did not know it was in use. I only saw lots of construction teams, working away. Hopefully soon things will be official. Cheers.
