Love the sharp-eyed magpie with its feathers flashing like stolen ink in the afternoon light.

Yes, they do have lovely contrasts to hide them in summer and winter! We have the good fortune of lots of them here around in the trees year round.

They are also known as the African Long-tailed Shrike.
In South Africa, Magpie Shrikes are found mainly in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, extending marginally into Gauteng, Free State, Northwest, Northern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal.

Oh, thank you for the great information. I did not know they were in South Africa and in so many areas. They do like the warmer summer months here, I see more of them at that time.

You are welcome Poet. Yes they love the grasslands.
The Bokmakierie Shrike is endemic to South Africa. It occurs across South Africa excluding most of the Limpopo Province. It is a shy bird and has little contact with other bush shrikes. There is a township and street named after it near Hazendal an area where I use to live for a while in Cape Town.
