the last story told
illustrated life-sized
sages color doors
~~~
I am keeping my words brief and respectfully allow the following photos to tell their story. The featured doors, called “The Last Judgement” are the main entrance to Bern Cathedral, Switzerland. The sculptures were designed and created by one artist, Daniel Hintz except for one sculpture, that of the figure of justice.
Closeup of Main Entrance tympanum Bern Cathedral:
Hintz’s sculptural work on the doors spanned the years from 1460 A.D to 1480 A.D. There are 47 large figures surrounding the doors — those are replicas pictured. The originals are in the Bern History Museum. The smaller sculptures of which there are 170 figures are the original works in situ.
Bern Cathedral, view from across the Aare River:
Trivia #1: Bern Cathedral’s interior stained glass windows are considered the most expensive in Switzerland.
Trivia #2: The city of Bern is the filming location for several Bollywood movies most notably; Krrish 3 (starring: Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra.)
Wow, that is some cathedral, slightly too garish for my taste, but the doors work well with that slightly over-the-top colour scheme going on.
It’s so colourful which seems to me is unusual for a catholic church exterior. It’s stunning! Maggie
The detail in those sculptures is amazing. Somehow, 20 years doesn’t seem long enough, but mainly because I wouldn’t know where to even begin. It’s a lovely cathedral and certainly one you’re not going to miss if you visit. I love your haiku.
Ten, twenty years…carving that long makes a pretty impressive doorway! But BOLLYWOOD MOVIES-???? THAT’s a revelation! 😀
Beautiful Cathedral Poet, with its impressive spire and turquoise doors, such an unusual colour for a churchm
I wonder why Bollywood loves filming in a protestant canton.
I believe the cathedral was built to house a bishop, but Protestantism arrived before a bishop.
A beautiful view from the river
And a marvelous haiku given the history of the cathedral
You are absolutely right, the change to Protestantism predates the Bishop’s appointment….fascinating church history/movements in the middle ages.
Yes, I quite like that view from the river, I feel its tranquility somehow…
Yes, I traveled through the canton, interesting history beautiful place. I was so young, I cant remember all the details but the river is offered exactly that feeling if tranquility in such tumult times.
Wow! This place is definitely worth a trip. Such craftsmanship! Lovely poem as well…the door does tell a story, you’re right. It’s interesting that the original is in a museum. Moving it must’ve been interesting!
