With a nave higher than that of the great Notre Dame De Paris, Cathedral-Basilica of Santa María in Palma (The Cathedral of Mallorca), Spain’s nave rises 43 meters (141 feet) above sea level.

Constructed between 1229 – 1346 A. D., The Cathedral of Mallorca’s massive interior is 160,000 meters cubed (more than half a million cubic feet.)

The featured original wood doors above, called The Great Doors were among the few parts of the building that survived intact Mallorca Spain’s major earthquake of 1851.

Trivia #1: The Cathedral of Mallorca is famous for its stained glass window called “The Gothic Eye.” At 13.8 meters in diameter (45 feet) The Gothic Eye is considered the largest original rose window in pure Gothic architecture history.

Note: There are larger rose windows in other cathedrals. However, unlike The Cathedral of Mallorca, theres is a mix of Gothic architectural styles (see interior view below).

Trivia #2: In 1960 a man-made lake was constructed between The Cathedral of Mallorca and The Meditterean Sea to remind the city’s millions of annual visitors, that the city’s longevity is a testimony to the “protection” of the sea as its outer “walls.”

  1. Oh my word, just amazing the symbolism built around and inside places of worship. So the artificial lake, does it get it’s water from the sea?

I am in awe of those wooden doors, still standing after the earthquake that destroyed the city. With hopes of doors is such a breathtaking opening line. Can you imagine the local parishioners adoration then and the stunning original gothic rose.

Thank you for taking us on a trip to Mallorca

I can imagine the splendor indeed. A cathedral that reminds the visitor of greater things that physical walls.

      My pleasure. Namaste

  2. “With hope as doors” is a lovely perspective. I am trying to imagine a rose window with a diameter of 45′. That photo of the interior gives some idea of the vastness — the rose window looks almost small. “Pure Gothic” is a wonder. Of course, it’s meant to be. Thanks for the uplifting.

  3. For some reason, my comment came through as “anonymous.” Of course that’s always intriguing, but it wasn’t what I intended. So I’m going to try this again.
