The resting place of forty-two kings and thirty-two queens, and regarded as the trailblazer of French Gothic Architecture with its innovative geometric design principles—Basilica St. Denis, France (circa 1145 AD) rose to greatness from its humble beginnings as the burial place of the saint that bears its name, to what is considered by many as the first example of a Gothic Architecture church.

Trivia #1: The famous rose stained-glass window design (Rayonnant), a signature of Gothic facades, was invented by the builders at Basilica St. Denis, out of a practical need for more light in the Basilica’s interior vaults. See the image below— (The rose window at the north end transept as seen through Basilica St. Denis’s south entrance doors ).

Trivia #2: Basilica St. Denis’ 86-meter (282-foot) North spire, damaged during a storm in 1846 is finally slated to be rebuilt. The planned restoration is expected to last 11 years and cost roughly €28 million (see wider angle, Basilica St. Denis, France below).

  1. I got excited. I’ve visited this one .. but accidentally deleted all the photos on my camera with an ‘I wonder what this button does’ moment and reformatted my memory card 🤦‍♀️

    The cathedral was amazing

  2. 74 royals passed through this magnificent architecture with its glorious portals and a redefined rose window, cloaked in kaleidoscopic colours.
Once an abbey overseen by an abbot or abbess.
Now decorated with the sculptures of St. DENIS.
The rose window lamps are too lovely.

    1. Truly a kaleidoscope of colors and architectural design. The skill of the craftspeople must have been epic and beyond remarkable to create and build a new style without all the modern design trappings.
And I love those rose window lamps .
      Happy Thursday, blessings!!

Awesome to behold and I’m thrilled to read that the cathedral will be restored.
Love how the arts and crafts of the church creates work.
Happy Thursday from my side too.
It is rainy, cold and the wind is howling, still I ventured out for a coffee and enjoying. Nights are off limits for me.
        Blessings to you too.

  3. Thanks once again for piquing my interest with your poetry and then walking me through a true piece of history. Can you imagine thinking up a new style or architecture, let alone one so intricate, so difficult to build and with so many obstacles to overcome. It amazes me. The photos are beautiful and I love the information.

    1. An historic place in so many marvelous ways You are right, I think, there must have been such a deep sense of commitment for the builders to “go out on a limb” and create something new without the technology of today…truly inspiring!
